MicroLite
MicroLite
is a hollow sphere used as a low density additive
for drilling fluids. It can be used as a low density
filler to reduce hydrostatic for use in under balanced
or near-balanced applications. It can also be used
to formulate low density LCM pills for use in low
pressure zones where large openings or fractures
cause high volume losses. MicroLite
is an inert, naturally occurring material. Because
of its low surface area to volume ratio, it has
little effect on fluid properties when used in concentrations
of 30 % or less. It can be used to increase viscosity
in high concentration slurries, such as LCM plugs.

Applications
MicroLite is especially effective when
used in conjunction with APHRON
ICS™
based technologies for the purpose of sealing large
openings. The product will deposit as a proppant-like
plug forming a firm loss stopping seal.
MicroLite is small and spherical so that it
easily passes through downhole tools and MWD/LWD
screens, making it an ideal material for application
in high angle, or lateral wells. Because of its
spherical nature, it also acts much like a lubricating
bead in these applications.
We
reccommend MicroLite be used in
concentrations of 5.0 to 30.0 percent by volume
for optimum performance in most drilling, workover
and completion operations. 30.0 - 50.0 percent by
volume for LCM plug applications.
Advantages
- Prevents
invasion and losses in large openings,
- Optimizes
well construction performance in difficult loss
areas,
- Reduces
torque and drag in highly deviated wells,
- Reduces
the tendency for differential sticking,
- When
used with an aphron based fluid mitigates the
potential for differential sticking.
